๐ Happy 626th Birthday! ๐
Today marks the 626th anniversary of one of Wilton`s Town Charters.
King Henry IV presented the Charter to Wilton on 20th May 1400AD.
Our Charter collection dates back over 900 years. Charters functioned as a "declaration of independence" allowing the ancient Borough of Wilton to act as a self-governing town. It allowed the town to appoint our own Mayor, Bailiffs and Aldermen to govern, granted rights to hold markets and fairs, established courts and gaols, and allowed for the collection of local taxes.
Elsewhere in 1400, Salisbury Plain would have been covered by hundreds of thousands of sheep, contributing to the local weaving industry that was growing up around Wilton and Salisbury. Old Sarum was almost completely abandoned as people moved to New Sarum (Salisbury). Wilton Abbey owned huge amounts of land around Wilton, but due to labour shortages caused by the Black Death, they were being forced to lease out their lands as grange farms, accelerating the rise of local farming families in the area. Wilton House wouldn`t be built on the abbey site for another 144 years.
You can read a translation of this charter, see the other Town Charters, and read more about the history of Wilton, on our website:
